Hello, my name is Dawn Bodenham. I teach Family Nutrition, also known as Family and Consumer Sciences, at the middle school. My classes run for 4 1/2 weeks and I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. I absolutely love working with middle school students! Our 6th graders work on a project to start them thinking about their future careers. They will learn about the sewing machine and complete a pillow to take home. Our 7th and 8th graders cook for their time in this class. I hope to give them basics that they can take into cooking meals for themselves in the future. We talk about nutrition, what nutrients do for our bodies, how we grow, and how we have choices when we eat, healthier or higher calorie options. I like students to begin thinking about life-long wellness.

I am originally from Lake Mills, Iowa. In 1997, I graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. I worked at Harmony School District, was a stay-at-home mom for many years, taught adult computer classes, and did some subbing before being hired in 2008 at the middle school. I have a wonderful job where I get to cook with kids. My goal is to help them to feel “it is okay to try” in the kitchen and in life.
